Pre-conference

The pre-conference will be a three-day affair, with different programs for each day: An Adventure Day, a Sightseeing Day and a Cooperative Role Play Day.

The first day (Adventure) will be an exploration of the immediate surroundings, with the possibility for either a day hike along the ridges, via ferratas and valleys of the "Saxon Switzerland" as this landscape is also called, or rock climb with the grand rockmaster Bernd Arnold.
Bernd is a living legend of the free climbing scene of this area and during many decades has opened hundreds of routes. Even through the isolation of the "Iron Curtain" during the years before 1989, he pushed the free climbing standards to levels many times unrivalled at the time. He has travelled and climbed in many countries, but his deep love for his home area shines through at every moment. More than just "another climbing day" he will provide an experience of the magic, history, and fantastic natural surroundings of the "Elbsandsteingebirge". He will be able to accommodate complete beginners as well as accomplished climbers in one group. So please do not hesitate to sign up for this extraordinary event. At night he will also give a slide show for all of us at the castle. For more information on him (in German only) or pictures of this beautiful landscape, visit his website at: www.bergsport-arnold.de.

On the second day (Sightseeing), we will walk from Hohnstein to Rathen and then take a boat ride down to Dresden. There, we will visit a palace and explore the downtown area of this city, which used to be called the "Florence of the Elbe River" before it was completely destroyed in WW II. World famous sights like the now reconstructed "Our Lady" church (Frauenkirche), the Zwinger or the Semper Opera building are all close by and can be visited on foot. We will - obviously - finish with an evening in a brewery to celebrate being together!

The third day will be a complex game in the castle, organized by our friends and colleagues Rüdiger Gilsdorf and Lars Christensen. It involves fantasy, role play and problem solving in the context of a story and invites participants to explore creative ways of experiential learning beyond classic activities.
