How to get to Hohnstein

Since Hohnstein is a small village in the middle of the mountains, we will organize a shuttle service for those arriving in Dresden by airplane, or in Dresden or Bad Schandau for those arriving by train. To reduce costs, we will be picking you up personally and might want to bundle the pick-up times. This could result in some waiting time, although we will try to reduce this as much as possible for all of you.

Plane

If you arrive by plane, Dresden is the closest airport, but it is a local one - meaning you have to get a connecting flight if you arrive from outside Germany. The closest international airport is Leipzig (approx. 100 km from Dresden), then Berlin (approx. 180 km). So, depending on prices and schedules, it might be worthwhile to check out train the connections to Dresden from either Leipzig or Berlin at at the website of the German railway The page is in English.

Train

If you arrive by train, check whether your train stops at Dresden Hauptbahnhof (=main station) or Dresden Neustadt. If it stops at both, please let us know both arrival times. We will then communicate to you where to get off, to minimize waiting and driving times for the shuttle service.

Bad Schandau is much closer to Hohnstein, and some IC, ICE or EC trains stop there. So, if you don't have to change trains in Dresden to get there, this will be the best option.

Car

From highway A4 take the A17 direction Prague (it's the only direction it goes from the A4).

Take the A17 (which is being constructed and doesn't go very far yet) until its very end, close to the town of Pirna.
Take that very last exit, make a right and follow this road for a few kilometers direction "Pirna".

Cross the river Elbe, then take the 2nd exit after the bridge: "Graupa / Neustadt".
Make a left at the end of the exit ramp, following the signs to "Neustadt".

At the 2nd traffic light, make a left, and follow the street uphill direction "Neustadt". At the top of the hill, make another left, still going direction "Neustadt".

Now follow this road through the village of "Lohmen", then the hamlet of "Rathewalde", until you hit a crossroads, where you make a right, following the signs to "Hohnstein".
Now just follow the signs to Hohnstein, until you hit the small, sloping market square in the middle of Hohnstein itself.

There you make a right - you can already see the big wall and gateway of the Hohnstein Castle.
Do not enter the gate, but just before it, make a right onto the parking lot.

Should the parking lot be full, park you car somewhere on that lot, come up through the gate and we will indicate an "overflow" parking lot somewhat away.

Parking space might get tight, so please arrange for car pools! Check out www.uk.map24.com for map & further driving instructions.
