Useful Tips for Planning Your Trip

Travel Time at a Glance

  • Pisa Airport → Calambrone: approx. 15–20 minutes
  • Pisa Centrale → Calambrone: approx. 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic and transport
  • Florence → Pisa Centrale (train): about 1 hour
  • Rome → Pisa Centrale (train): about 2.5–3 hours
  • Milan → Pisa Centrale (train): about 3 hours

Please note that travel times may vary during peak tourist seasons or weekends.

Taxi Sharing and Cost Awareness

  • Taxis in Italy are reliable but not cheap. Sharing a taxi with other participants can significantly reduce costs.
  • Informal taxi sharing often happens naturally among conference participants arriving at the same time — especially at Pisa Airport and Pisa Centrale.
  • Official taxis are white and clearly marked. Always avoid unofficial drivers offering rides inside stations or airports.
  • If you need a taxi receipt, ask the driver before starting the ride.

Public Transport: What to Know

  • Local buses are affordable but can be infrequent, especially in the evening.
  • Bus numbers and routes may change, so avoid relying on printed schedules found at stops.
  • Always check updated routes and timetables on the Autolinee Toscane website:
    https://www.at-bus.it
  • Tickets for buses must be purchased in advance (online, via app, or at authorised sellers). Tickets usually cannot be bought on board.

Things to Avoid

  • Avoid planning tight connections on your arrival day. Italian transport works… but prefers flexibility.
  • Don’t assume that everyone speaks fluent English, especially on local buses. A smile and patience go a long way.
  • Avoid renting a car unless you feel comfortable driving in Italy; for most participants, train + taxi is simpler and less stressful.
